“Well, if they’re 45 years old, and they show up, and say, I want insurance because I’ve got a heart disease, it’s like, `Hey guys, we can’t play the game like that,'” Romney told Leno. “You’ve got to get insurance when you’re well, and if you get ill, then you’re going to be covered.”
So, if you’re 45, lost your insurance because you lost your job, your COBRA benefits expired and you can’t get insurance in the individual market because you have heart disease and can’t afford the coverage (if you are even lucky enough to live in a state where an insurer offers it) you’re, well, screwed.
Good to know he’s got that all figured out.
Insight, analysis & opinion from Joe Paduda
What is the one thing Mitt Romney really wants besides the White House?

Romney is so out of touch with reality. His belief is that a person can go buy their own insurance. He has no regard to the price and whether that person will even get the insurance, because of age, past illness, occupation, etc., etc.
This is a summary of Mitt Romney HealthCare plan. The 45 year old will do fine:

In addition, when Romney becomes president, the 45 year old in your story will find a job way before his COBRA benefit is expired since Romney knows a thing or two about how to run an economy and create jobs. He has run Businesses successfully, he has run a state successfully and he has run an Olympic successfully. They made a case study in Harvard business school using Romney’s achievements in the Salt Lake City Olympic. I have a lot of respect for successful executives. It’s not an easy job.
Think about it, we hired a CEO for a country which is the biggest economy in the world with 0 executive experiences. President Obama is a nice guy. I do like him. But he doesn’t have my vote. That’s for sure. Oh and by the way, I am a woman and an immigrant.
The more I hear from Romney, the more convinced I am that he doesn’t want the job of POTUS but rather he wants the job title of POTUS. So should he win that title he will still be the man with no policies, no vision and worse no moral direction. He will be so beholden to the most extreme elements of his party that he will turn over actual governance to those people and not only will he destroy any hope of health care for all, but any hope for any advancement by anyone other than the very wealthiest among us.
Just a quick point: If someone exhausts their 18 months of COBRA, and they have major health issues, they can still qualify for a HIPAA plan.
Of course, rates are indeed high on that type of plan. No. Check that. VERY high.
Azita – thanks for the comment. Allow me to respond.
1. Romney calls for tax credits to allow individuals to buy insurance. However he does NOT say how much this will cost, nor does he say where the money will come from. Estimates are his plan will cost about the same as current health reform, however until we get details we won’t know.
2. The US government is NOT a business. CEOs don’t have to deal with Congress, lobbyists, polls, media, and elections. They can make decisions and implement them. That’s not how government works.
We aren’t electing a CEO. We’re electing a president. And being a president requires political skills, critical in dealing with Congress, the public, and foreign leaders.
Finally, I’d note that part of Romney’s ‘success’ in Massachusetts was the passage of universal coverage, the template for national health reform.
